The Cayman Drama Society is putting together an ensemble cast of 15 actors – 10 women and five men – for the staging of a double-bill classic by Spanish playwright Federico Garcia Lorca.
Auditions for Blood Wedding and The House of Bernarda Alba are scheduled for Tuesday, 1 March, and Wednesday, 2 March, from 6.30-9pm at the Prospect Theatre.
The play will rehearse in March through May, and will take place in June.
There is no need to bring prepared scenes to the auditions, as actors will be given time to rehearse on stage. Actors will audition with other actors, not solo.
“Both plays are full of tension, passion, beauty and tragedy and are set in rural Andalusia in the ‘30s,” said Nick Dereza, the director. “The first half is going to be the poetic and the highly stylised Blood Wedding, as tensions amongst rival families ‘boil over’ for an organised wedding.”
Blood Wedding includes appearances by the moon and death.
The second play, The House of Bernarda Alba, has an all-female cast.
“The second play has so much emotion, but with room for dry humour,” he said. “Both plays are masterpieces and have everything in them.”
The parts require a variety of ages, particularly for female actors.
“These are exciting and challenging parts, but in particular, it will give the ladies contrasting characters to play in each half,” Mr. Dereza said. “The acting will be both naturalistic but passionate.”
The production are also looking for stagehands.
