Strong voices for Rent needed

The Cayman Drama Society needs talented actors and singers for its upcoming production of the Pulitzer and Tony Award winning musical Rent. Auditions are being held on Saturday, 2 June with callbacks on Sunday, 3 June.

Rent is a modern rock musical that follows a group of young impoverished artists and musicians as they struggle with life, love, poverty and the reality of HIV/AIDS in New York City’s Lower East Side.

Created by Jonathan Larson, the musical is filled with powerful rock numbers and pop ballads.

The Cayman Drama Society’s production of Rent will open on 8 November and run the course of three weekends.

The director and producer will be auditioning for eight lead characters, plus a dozen or supporting cast members.

They are looking out for people with strong voices, plenty of character and energy to carry off the show. We need good rock or modern Broadway style voices,” says the show’s director. “No opera singers – we need to understand the lyrics!”

It’s a demanding show and will require a cast with previous experience on stage or in music. “It’s not an entry-level or starter show for those looking to be on stage for the first time,” adds the director.

Those wanting to audition will need to prepare and sing 32 bars from one of the songs from Rent, on the audition song list, in addition to 32 bars of a rock, gospel or pop song of their choice to be sung a capella. Songs and backing tracks plus cast lists can be downloaded directly from the Cayman Drama Society’s website.
