Spikers are setting up for big dig

Local volleyball hopes to invigorate public support for the sport. The Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation is hosting its inaugural Big Dig Beach Volleyball Tournament next Saturday, Oct. 19. Royal Palms will serve as the venue from 2 p.m.

A press release from the federation said the competition hopes to boost local volleyball initiatives. The release states, “The venue, which is not unfamiliar with beach volleyball enthusiasts, has agreed to partner with the federation to raise funds for the ongoing indoor and beach volleyball programs.

“The goal of the federation is to continually promote and expand the sport of volleyball in the Cayman Islands and to provide athletes with more opportunities to compete internationally.”

The four-man tournament, which is modeled off similar events in the U.S., offers a variety of prizes including Cayman Airways tickets. Teams are encouraged to compete in costume. Registration is currently ongoing though teams will be allowed to sign up next Saturday at 1-1:45 p.m. with matches slated to begin at 2 p.m. sharp.

If the action was not hot enough, there will be an after-party at Royal Palms featuring local DJs such as DJ Renato and Xixgon. A raffle will take place throughout the day as purchasing a $10 ticket will guarantee a prize ranging in value from $25 to $600.

Among the sponsors for next Saturday’s event are: Royal Palms, White Tip Lager (Cayman Islands Brewery Ltd.), Cayman Airways, Sand Angels, Life Extensions, World Gym, LIME, Duke’s, Waterfront, Mizu, Karma, Smoothie King and Monster Energy Drinks.
