Serpell qualifies for Nanjing

Polly Serpell will be representing the Cayman Islands at the Youth Olympic Games.

The equestrian rider qualified for the 2014 Games in Nanjing, China last month at the Fédération Equestre Internationale World Jumping Challenge in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Cayman Islands Olympic Committee is supporting Serpell, who is competing under a Universality Place designation, on her travel to China next August and said in a press release that she will be supported prior to the competition.

The statement read, “The Cayman Islands received a Universality Place for one female in the sport of equestrian but because of the degree of difficulty, Polly had to earn this place by meeting the International Equestrian Federation standard with a Certificate of Capability. Polly competed in Category A in San Juan and finished with less than eight penalties in the first round in order to gain her certificate. The Olympic committee will be funding her preparation, travel and accommodation for the Games and are excited to see her compete in the Games next summer.”

Serpell’s achievement comes after strong showings in local competitions. At the Cayman Islands Equestrian Federation Autumn National Dressage Show last month, she nabbed a first place finish on her horse Calidad. At the federation’s national show jumping championship this summer, Serpell rode Calidad to second place finishes in the 0.85 meter child and 0.90m-1m open categories.
