Cubans escape in GT, recaptured same day

Three Cuban migrants brought to Grand Cayman on a cruise ship March 5 escaped from the Immigration Detention Centre Tuesday, according to local authorities.  

They were recaptured later in the evening, Immigration Department officials confirmed.  

The three were part of a group of 24 migrants who were picked up at sea by the Carnival Paradise, which was en route from the United States to Cayman, earlier in the month. The group included 23 males and one female. 

The cruise ship picked them up after their makeshift boat, which appeared to be sinking was spotted by passengers. 

Meanwhile, on Cayman Brac, nine Cuban men were found walking along the island’s main road late Monday.  

Officers from the Immigration Department travelled to the Brac Tuesday evening and escorted the group to Grand Cayman for repatriation.
