Credit Union event will benefit HospiceCare fund

The 2014 Credit Union’s 5K Walk/Run is being staged again next month.

It is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 4, and will start and end at the Credit Union building at 58 Huldah Ave. in George Town, opposite Smith Road Oval cricket pitch, at 6:30 a.m.

Forms can be collected from the Credit Union, Department of Sports and Winner Circle. Registration and race pack collection will begin on Sept. 20 at Foster’s Food Fair, Airport Road and continues on Sept. 22 to Oct. 3 at the Credit union building from 3–6 p.m.

There is a stroller category as well as the usual female and male age group categories. Many spot prizes, plus prizes for the fastest female and male civil servant and fastest female and male Credit Union employee.

Entry is $15 for adults and $5 for children; groups of five or more $10 each.

Credit Union’s Sonya Bendo said that this year’s proceeds will go toward Derek Haines’s fundraising efforts toward the new Cayman HospiceCare building. He is running six marathons this year to raise $1 million for the fund, and he has completed four so far and raised over $600,000.

“Credit Union is pleased to host this event as it is an opportunity to give back to the community.” Bendo said.

Merta Day, sports coordinator for women at the Department of Sports, said this type of event caters to all levels of fitness, allowing for a wider cross-section to participate, which is the primary objective of the Department of Sports involvement in such community events. “We are extremely pleased to hear that the proceeds will be given to the new HospiceCare building,” she said.
