A George Town home, destroyed by fire, is being rebuilt, bit-by-bit, as the Cayman community steps in to help.
Staff from MEPCO and Cayman Electrical Services were on site at the home Thursday to donate all the electrical materials for the new building, which will be home to the extended Buttrum family.
The family’s timber home in Windsor Park burned to the ground in a matter of minutes in July after an electrical fire ripped through the building, leaving 17 people homeless.
Overwhelming public support
After a massive outpouring of public support, sparked by CayBrew boss Matthew Leslie, several firms stepped in to help build a new home for the family on the site.
Construction firm Arch and Godfrey is managing the project with help from various companies that have donated time and materials. Much of the labor is coming from the Buttrum family themselves, as well as their friends.
Eduardo Bernal is the architect on the project, while the Androgroup and Corporate Electric are also involved.
Andrew Mellaneo, site engineer for Arch and Godfrey, said everyone was stepping up to give back to the community.
March finish targeted
He expects the home to be finished by mid-March, with the interior likely to be completed by May.
Initially the family had hoped to be able to move in by Christmas but the planning phase took longer than expected. Alwin Buttrum told the Compass he and his family had been working around the clock to get the job done, and were grateful for the massive community support.
