Today’s Editorial March 21: Consider tobacco law changes

Health Minister Anthony Eden has said publicly that the tobacco legislation being considered in the Legislative Assembly won’t be exactly what was tabled.

We figured Government would take another look at the proposed legislation before passing it.

One of the contentious issues is the banning of smoking in cigar bars.

We contend cigar bars should be exempt from the legislation that proposes to ban all smoking in public places under a roof.

Cigar smokers go to cigar bars for a specific purpose – to smoke cigars.

People don’t go to cigar bars for a fine dining experience. They go to smoke.

So let them.

Too, legislation that would ban all smoking in public places would be a hardship on cigar bar owners.

Most of have pumped thousands of dollars into their businesses.

Government has no business putting someone out of business, which is what the legislation would do if it is passed in its current form.

And while we don’t think cigar bars should be included in the legislation, we do think something limiting smoking must be passed.

So do nearly 90 per cent of the respondents to the most recent poll at www.caycompass.com.

A whopping 68.7 per cent who took the poll said they like the legislation in its current form.

We can bet they aren’t smokers.

Another 16.8 per cent of the respondents said they approve the legislation, but it goes too far as it is written.

And we think they are right.

Some smoking should be banned.

Going out to eat and having to breath in someone else’s cigarette, cigar or pipe smoke is annoying.

It’s also unhealthy.

Let Government know what you think about the tobacco legislation.

If you don’t speak up now you won’t have any say in how the law is written.
