Take responsibility for security

Our immigration position on accepting applications for employment based on the country of origin and quotas, based on the applicant’s home country vs. the ability to carry out acceptable satisfaction regarding who is coming and living on our shores, needs immediate attention.

Times have definitely changed and a letter from the police department literally means nothing as far as knowing if we have problematic individuals entering these islands.

Is the Cayman security situation a time bomb waiting to explode?

There are many concerns that need to be addressed in order to make our beautiful and safe destination as secure as possible.

The most concern should be directed toward the amount of people that are here on work permit conditions without thorough and effective background investigations into their names, fingerprints, criminal history, verification of the diplomas and qualification certificates, driving records, financial history (if bankruptcy occurred or extreme debt), political and religious affiliations.

If we continue to allow people to enter and remain as employees, particularly in security and critical infrastructure positions without appropriate precautions, we are inviting circumstances that will prove hazardous to all of us including our financial/tourism industries and our cargo transshipment connections.

If employers cannot have the relevant background checks carried out, due to the inability and complications from the home country of the applicant then it is downright neglect of responsibility for our government to allow employees (that are not screened) to infiltrate our society.

Imagine an organised plot to attack our financial position and target British interests, or tourist planes and cruise ships, or even cargo containers returning empty to American ports – and the aftermath investigation reveals that the operatives, who carried out the plan, where never subject to appropriate background screening. Who would be responsible?

Please, let’s work together and take the necessary steps to ensure that we have done our best to keep Cayman safe and special for us, our children and the prosperity that we have become accustomed to.

Thank you for your attention and may God continue to bless us all.
