NRF to get historic home

National Trust House off Eastern Avenue, which has been sitting badly damaged since Hurricane Ivan, will soon be welcoming staff of the Cayman Islands National Recovery Fund.

Cynthia Arie, marketing and development manager for the NRF, explained that renovation work on the building will be completed within a few weeks.

‘We are grateful to our current landlord at Artemis House for allowing us to stay another week as repairs on the National Trust House are being completed.

‘We hope to move in by 7 March, if everything goes according to plan. We have our fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly.

‘By the beginning of March that should be our new home,’ she said.

Butterfield Bank is sponsoring the cost of repairs, which is estimated at between $10,000 and $15,000.

‘It’s quite exciting. We’re so appreciative of Butterfield Bank for stepping up to the plate and donating the funds for the work,’ Ms Arie said.

Sheree Ebanks, director and head of wealth management and fiduciary services at the bank, spoke of its involvement with the project.

‘Butterfield Bank (Cayman) Limited wanted to make a contribution to the community in which we work by helping rebuild a major icon of our national heritage.

‘We are delighted to be able help with the restoration of National Trust House and help preserve it for current and future generations of the Cayman Islands,’ Mrs. Ebanks said.

The house is the former headquarters of the National Trust, which is now located in Webster House on South Church Street.

‘The National Trust is giving us space for two years rent free. It’s just a matter of refurbishing and repairs. It gives us a semi-permanent home,’ Ms Arie said.

Local vendors are being approached to provide needed materials for the renovation, she added.
