Come on, roll up your sleeves.
Tuesday was World Blood Donor Day and while people did show up at the Health Services Authority Blood Bank to give, the turnout was dismal.
Come on Cayman, we can do better than this.
A special target in this year’s drive was the youth of the islands.
Maybe it was difficult for the young of our community to get to the Blood Bank.
Maybe they are – as someone suggested – afraid of needles.
Maybe we, as a community, are not doing enough to educate them on the need to give blood.
The good people in this country are experts in raising money for worthy causes.
It’s time that more people begin to rally around the Blood Bank in efforts to help them buy a mobile blood bank, which costs between US$80,000 and US$120,000.
That’s a lot of cash, but if enough people or groups and organizations rallied, we could all make a difference.
Mobile blood banks are wonderful because they can go to the donor instead of the donor having to find time during his or her busy day to fight traffic to make it to the Blood Bank at the Government’s hospital.
Whole communities and districts can set aside special times on holidays or weekends to visit mobile blood banks that travel to their areas.
And yes, giving blood at a mobile blood bank is just as safe as giving it at the Health Services Authority Blood Bank in George Town.
There are certain criteria that people must meet to give blood, but they are basic and make it possible for almost anyone to give the gift of life.
While a given individual may be unable to donate, he or she may be able to recruit a suitable donor.
Blood banks are always in need of volunteers to assist at blood draws or to organize mobile blood drives.
In addition, monetary donations are always welcome to help ensure that blood banks can continue to provide safe blood to those in need.
World Blood Donor Day has come and gone for this year. But, fortunately, our Blood Bank is open Monday through Friday from 8.30am until 5pm and will gladly register donors and accept donations anytime.
Come on Cayman, roll up your sleeves.
