A fundraising campaign is under way to replace the roof of the historic Eldemire House in Cayman Brac.
The house was donated to the Brac chapter of the National Trust earlier this summer.
Fund-raising by Trust members has already started, and plans are in the works to approach businesses on the Brac and Brackers in Grand Cayman to contribute towards the reconstruction.
‘There have already been many offers of help from the community,’ said Brac Trust chair Martin Keeley.
Earlier this summer, the house got a new look when a huge tarp was hauled up to cover its roof.
Brac Trust member Mitchum Sanford organized a team of teenage boys who, under his direction, made short work of the project – hauling the mammoth silver tarp until it covered the roof of the entire building to protect it against the elements.
Some parts of the roof were starting to leak quite badly, especially where the main house joins the kitchen at the back, said Mr. Keeley.
‘We need to protect the building and its contents until we can generate enough funds to restore the house to the way it was in the 1930s,’ he said.
An inventory of all the photographs in the building is under way, and once completed, the family photographs will be sent over to the National Archive in Grand Cayman. There, they will be copied and conserved, and duplicates sent back for display in the house once renovations have been completed.
