Two people have been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and other offences in incidents in 2023 and 2024.
Katherine Lopez, 24, of West Bay faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving and driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, in the death of a cyclist.
It is alleged Lopez’s Honda HRV struck Tara Bahadur, who was 22, as he rode his bike on Esterley Tibbetts Highway in the early hours of 7 Dec. 2024.
Bahadur, who was originally from Nepal, had only been in Cayman for a few months. He was rushed to hospital but later pronounced dead by doctors.
He worked for George Town-based H&A Janitorial and was contracted out to Agua restaurant in Camana Bay, where he was in the entry-level role of dishwasher.
Lopez appeared in Summary Court on 20 Jan. The case was adjourned until a later date and she was released on bail.
Frank Sound fatal accident
Kent Rankin, who was 47 at time, appeared in the same court on 19 Jan. charged with a string of offences related to a fatal accident where a cyclist died and another was injured.
Daniel McFarlane, a 23-year-old father of one, died in the alleged hit-and-run incident.
It is alleged Rankin’s white Chevrolet Blazer SUV hit two cyclists on Frank Sound Road at about 9:30pm on 28 Mar. 2023.
Rankin, from North Side, is charged with causing death by dangerous driving, with an alternative of causing death by careless driving.
He is also charged with causing death when driving while disqualified and causing death while driving without insurance, as well as causing grievous bodily harm and conspiracy to defeat justice.
Rankin was also released on bail pending a further court appearance.
