The first-ever STEM Racing Cayman Islands National Finals, held on 25 April at the John Gray Gymnasium, saw five local high schools compete for the national title.
Students designed, built, branded and raced miniature Formula 1 style cars on a 20-metre track, using industry-relevant tools such as CAD/CAM software, while developing critical life skills including communication, leadership and strategic thinking.
Teams were judged on engineering and design, enterprise and project management, branding and pit display, verbal presentations and on-track performance with the chance to earn up to 960 points.
Claiming the national champions title with 542.1 points was Apex Racers of Layman E. Scott High School in Cayman Brac. They also walked away with a haul of trophies including the Design & Engineering, Enterprise, Verbal Presentation, Team Identity, and Best Sportsmanship awards.
Scorch Racing from Cayman Prep and High School took second place overall with 409.5 points, additionally winning the Pit Display and Project Management awards, while Grace Stem Racing from Grace Christian Academy finished third with 382.0 points.
Other notable honours went to CIS Racing of Cayman International School for Scrutineering and Best Engineered Car and Velocity X of John Gray High School securing the Fastest Car award at 1.298 seconds.
‘Far more than a competition’
Serving as the official In-Country Coordinator for STEM Racing supported by F1, the Cayman Motoring Federation brought together these students to cap off a season of engineering and intense competition that began in September 2025.
Jane Scaletta, president of the Cayman Motoring Federation and in-country coordinator for STEM Racing, said in a press release, “This moment represents far more than a competition – it is the culmination of a vision to bring world-class STEM opportunities to the Cayman Islands.
“From September last year to today, we have watched students transform into engineers, leaders, and innovators. Their confidence, creativity and determination have been truly inspiring. This is only the beginning, and we look forward to seeing even more students join us next season,” she added.
