In the event that the landfill catches fire, the following steps should be taken:

  • Avoid the affected area where possible and remain upwind if outdoors
  • If you are in nearby areas, keep windows and doors closed
  • Use air conditioning on recirculation mode if available
  • People with asthma should carry and use prescribed reliever medication as needed
  • Seek medical attention if symptoms develop or worsen
  • Higher-risk groups who should take extra care:
  • People with chronic health conditions
  • Individuals with heart or cardiovascular conditions
  • Children and older adults

Health symptoms to watch for:

Seek medical care if you experience:

  • Persistent shortness of breath
  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Confusion or unusual drowsiness
  • Severe headache, dizziness or vomiting
  • Irritation with coughing of dark or unusual sputum
