In the event that the landfill catches fire, the following steps should be taken:
- Avoid the affected area where possible and remain upwind if outdoors
- If you are in nearby areas, keep windows and doors closed
- Use air conditioning on recirculation mode if available
- People with asthma should carry and use prescribed reliever medication as needed
- Seek medical attention if symptoms develop or worsen
- Higher-risk groups who should take extra care:
- People with chronic health conditions
- Individuals with heart or cardiovascular conditions
- Children and older adults
Health symptoms to watch for:
Seek medical care if you experience:
- Persistent shortness of breath
- Chest pain or tightness
- Confusion or unusual drowsiness
- Severe headache, dizziness or vomiting
- Irritation with coughing of dark or unusual sputum
