He fled Romania and has been on the run ever since. According to testimony from an Immigration officer and an Interpol agent, he arrived in the Cayman Islands from Cuba, undetected, in September. It was only when he tried to enter Jamaica after boarding a flight to Kingston on Oct. 14 that anyone no- ticed there was an international warrant out for his arrest. She was the RMS Atlantis, weighing 16,000 tons and carrying “450 wealthy, mostly elderly passengers, more than three-quarters of whom came ashore for the day.” It was a Monday. On Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015, five cruise ships visited Grand Cayman, bringing 16,642 passengers to George Town. If three-quarters of them came ashore, more than 12,480 men, women and chil- dren had the opportunity to explore stores, restaurants and structures that didn’t exist 78 years ago, along with the island’s distinctive natural attractions. In port for the day were Carnival Breeze, Regal Princess, Nieuw Amsterdam, Celebrity Silhouette and Liberty of the Seas. Christmas Day also brought five cruise ships to Cayman, car- rying 14,310 passengers. In 2014, just over 1.6 million cruise ship passengers visited the Cayman Islands. Tourist hit by truck on West Bay Road FIFA scandal: Swiss hand evidence to US authorities Courthouse flagpole fixed Michael Klein mklein@pinnaclemedialtd.com Seven months after high- ranking FIFA officials were arrested in a dawn raid at a Zurich hotel and charged with racketeering and corrup- tion in a U.S. court, the Swiss Federal Office of Justice has given U.S. authorities a first set of bank documents that will be used as evidence in criminal proceedings against the football executives. The documents contain information about bank ac- counts that were allegedly used to pay bribes in connec- tion with the granting of mar- keting rights for football tour- naments in Latin America and the United States. In total, 39 FIFA officials and sports marketing exec- utives have been indicted in the U.S. investigation. They are accused of having nego- tiated more than $200 mil- lion in bribes over television and marketing contracts for football events such as FIFA World Cup qualifiers, the Gold Cup, the Copa America and the Copa Libertadores. Former CONCACAF pres- ident Jeffrey Webb has pleaded guilty to involvement in racketeering and bribery schemes and agreed to for- feit more than US$6.7 million. He could also face up to 20 years’ imprisonment. U.S. authorities have re- quested Swiss legal assis- tance on three occasions, in March, April and May. In re- sponse, the Swiss Federal Office of Justice ordered the collection of documents re- lating to 50 bank accounts with 10 banks. Before granting legal as- sistance, Swiss authorities have to examine whether a link exists between the doc- uments sought and the of- fenses detailed in the official request, and whether the doc- uments are needed to pursue criminal proceedings. So far, Switzerland has is- sued eight partial rulings that were not challenged in court, and “others will follow,” Swiss federal justice officials an- nounced in a press statement. In one case the account holder agreed that relevant docu- ments could be handed over. The U.S. authorities have further requested records re- lating to Swiss criminal pro- ceedings against FIFA offi- cials that were suspended in 2010 and records re- lating to criminal proceed- ings against the executives of sports marketing com- pany ISL. The Swiss actions in these matters are thought to be relevant in the U.S. criminal proceedings. Swiss authorities had pre- viously frozen US$80 mil- lion in 13 bank accounts, fol- lowing a U.S. request. These assets will remain frozen until all legal assistance proceedings have been con- cluded. If U.S. prosecutors can obtain a U.S. court order to seize these assets, Swiss authorities said they will be handed over. An of- ficial extradition request for Alfredo Hawit of Honduras, the president of CONCACAF, has yet to be made. It took a four-stage scaffolding and an adapted hookstick to get the job done, but Colby Powery and Jaime Ramos from the Public Works Department had Cayman’s official flag flying properly outside the Law Courts Building on Wednesday. Mr. Ramos explained that a snaphook had become entangled in the halyard at the top of the pole, which prevented the flag from being raised and lowered.
