Numerous fundraising efforts and holiday drives take place during the festive season to help make wishes come true. From toy drives and holiday ornaments to Christmas cards and calendars, there’s no better time to show your goodwill by helping to spread Christmas cheer. Here are several ways to give back this season. “For it is in giving that we receive.” - St. Francis of Assisi The Camana Bay Christmas Give aims to brighten Christmas for families in need. This year, contributions will go towards The Good Samaritan Food Bank, a new organization on island that is committed to providing a solution to hunger in the Cayman Islands. HERE ARE THE SOME OF THE WAYS TO GIVE BACK THIS CHRISTMAS AT CAMANA BAY: • Drop off canned food and non-perishable items to the Camana Bay Visitor Centre for the Good Samaritan Food Bank to distribute to those in need. • Purchase a photo package with Camana Bay’s Traditional or Caribbean Santa photo sessions and Picture This Studios will donate CI$1 to the Give fund. • Donate funds at the collection box or using the cascading coin stand at Camana Bay Cinema. • Participate in the Santa Run on Sunday, Dec. 17 and dash around the Town Centre. It starts at 6:30 a.m. and you will need to donate a tin of food to the food bank. All the funds will be donated to The Good Samaritan Food Bank. As a gesture of appreciation, Dart will match contributions up to CI$10,000. SSP PEECIA ALL FFEAAT T ATAATA UR REE SPECIAL FEATURE 1 CAYMAN COMPASS • FRIDAY DECEMBER 1, 2017The bikers are back this year and are revving up for their 15th annual Christmas toy drive, Toys 4 Tots. Members of the Cayman Islands Motorcycle Riders Association are seeking donations of new, unwrapped toys. They can be dropped off at several collection points including Cost-U-Less, Flow outlets and the Book Nook. The drive runs until Dec. 13. Last year’s toy drive brought in more than 1,200 toys. This year, the toys will be distributed at the Cayman Islands Fire Service annual Community Christmas. Toys are also distributed to several non-profi t organizations such as Maple House, the National Council of Voluntary Organisations and the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre. Other items are donated to Santa for his annual rounds at the Cayman Islands Hospital on Christmas Day. “Doing this event year after year it has become the highlight for the year in many ways for CIMRA,” says Keith Keller, president of CIMRA. “It is an event that riders look forward to. We get such a huge support from the community. To see the kids’ faces as they get the toys is really the icing on the cake.” A live remote will take place on Saturday, Dec. 9 at Cost-U-Less from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., where they will be collecting toys and registering riders for the Toy Run. The annual Toy Run around the island takes place on Sunday, Dec. 10, starting from the Turtle Farm. Registration opens at 9:45 a.m. and the ride starts at 11 a.m. Collection bins will remain in place until Dec. 13. The toys will then be picked up, sorted and delivered to the Cayman Islands Fire Service for its Dec. 16 annual Community Christmas. TOY DRIVES HELP SPREAD By Danielle Neeson Two toy drives return this season to help ensure every child has a gift to open on Christmas Day. Elisabeth Bise is once again spreading holiday cheer with The 25 Days of Christmas Toy Drive, now in its 10th year. The 17-year-old has been collecting toys for children in need since she was eight years old. Her older sister, Victoria, started the campaign in 2008 when she was just 13. Now spearheading the drive, Elisabeth took up the torch when her big sister left to study overseas and is counting on yet another very successful year. “Every year, we receive many fantastic donations from individuals and businesses who love to know this toy drive is run by children – well, teenagers now – and they know that our motives are genuine. I only want to make children of the Cayman Islands happy during the holidays,” says Elisabeth. “I count on your support to help me, and I am truly thankful for it.” The drive kicked off on Nov. 30 and wraps up on Dec. 18, early enough for the various recipients to be able to distribute all the donations. New, unwrapped gifts can be dropped off at the Cayman Islands Customs Agency on Godfrey Nixon Way. Alternatively, arrangements can be made for group donations to be picked up. Gifts are welcome for all ages – from babies through teens. Monetary donations are also appreciated as Elisabeth uses the funds to purchase special gifts. “Cash donations always very appreciated because it allows me to purchase items I usually don’t receive for specifi c ages, and some items specifi cally needed for the pediatric ward,” she says. Their mother, Veronique Bise, says support for the drive has been overwhelming. “This couldn’t be achieved without the amazing, outstanding, wonderful support of so many of you, and for helping The 25 Days of Christmas Toy Drive this year again, Elisabeth and Victoria would like to say a big thank you,” she says. The gifts are delivered to The Department of Children & Family Services and the Cayman Islands Hospital pediatric ward. For Elisabeth, spreading holiday cheer to young patients is close to her heart. She’s had several major surgeries in the past few years and knows too well how much special touches can make a diff erence to a child in hospital. She is also appreciative of the Cayman Islands Customs Agency, which has been a sponsor since the start. The agency collects and delivers the toys each year. “It literally takes one of their large trucks to fi t everything in,” says Elisabeth. Group and corporate donations can be arranged by calling Veronique at 926- 5599, Darrell at 925-5707 or emailing Elisabeth at elisabethtoydrive@hotmail. com. HospiceCare, which provides free end-of-life care and support to individuals and their families, is also selling boxed Christmas greeting card sets. A box of nine is $15. The non-profi t group is promoting its “100 for 1000” campaign – an appeal marking its 20th anniversary that is asking 100 individuals to pledge a donation of $1,000 per year for fi ve years. The goal is to raise $100,000 per year to help ensure it can provide care to all those who need it. Watercolours Calendar A beautiful 2018 watercolors calendar has been produced to raise funds for HospiceCare and the National Council of Voluntary Organisations.
