Cable & Wireless Ltd. announced on the 3rd that the Company had offered 15 scholarships at the university of the West Indies to students in all Commonwealth Caribbean countries served by the University and in which the company operates. They will be tenable at the University in the faculties of engineering and science. The Company's offer has been accepted by the University and the first 15 scholarships will be awarded this year. Making the announcement in London today the Cable & Wireless Chairman, Col. Donald McMillan, said: "There are no strings of any kind attached to these scholarships. There will be no, repeat no, condition that applicants must be Cable & Wireless employees or members their families. Students will not be under any obligation to join our staff on the completion of their studies. The selection of students will be entirely the responsibility of the University and the names of those chosen will be announced each year. Our proposals have been under discussion for some months and were not finalised until we were completely satisfied that the University and the Education authorities of the countries concerned were in full agreement, The decision to place the scholarships within the faculties of engineering and science was taken because we felt that this would offer opportunities in professions which will make major contributions to the Caribbean. The University has agreed that the awards will be identified as 'Cable and Wireless Scholarships'. I personally hope they will be accepted as a further indication of the way in which Cable & Wireless has become closely associated with the Caribbean and will strengthen still further the goodwill and confidence for the future shared by Company and the countries where we operate." Scholarships for the 1969 - 70 session will be awarded by the: University as follows:Four to present second year students of the University. Four to present first year students of the University. Four to students enter ing a degree course.

Three post graduate scholarships for studiesleading to a higher degree in engineering of science. All scholarships will be awarded initially for one year and will be renewable for further years of study on the recommendation of the University. The total cost to Cable & Wireless of the scholarships is £8,000 (about 40,000 W.I. dollars) Cable and Wireless employs over 1,000 West Indies staff in the Caribbean and has branches at Antigua, Barbados, British Honduras, British Virgin Island, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla, St. Lucia; St. Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks Island.

The Company's Cableship based at St. Lucia also has a West Indian crew. The Company is responsible for all inter-island and overseas telecommunications in the Commonwealth Caribbean and additionally for the Internal Telephone System of seven of the territories.
