Former American President Harry S. Truman, who died Tuesday 26 December at the age of 88, was buried Thursday in his home town of Independence, Missouri. He was hospitalized December 5 with a lung infection and over the next three weeks his condition steadily grew worse.

Truman became president in 1945 after the death of Franklin Roosevelt. He was eulogized as "a common man who reached uncommon greatness, a man who did not seek power, but used it wisely when it was thrust upon him". President in one of the most turbulent eras of history, Truman will be recorded in history as the man who authorized the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan, the approval of the Marshall Plan and initiation of the airlift which broke the Soviet blockade of Berlin.
