Fun for all at Monday's Family Fair Day

During the Wheelbarrow race, N.C.S.S' Len Cohen recalls, Cardinal Avenue in George Town was lined four deep with spectators. After last Year's rousing success, the committee members got together, made a list of the events that were the most successful, and a list of the things about the Fair that needed improvement, and decided without reservation to carry it forward as an annual event.
What makes this year's Fair Day especially timely and relevant is its coinciding with International Family Year designated by the United Nations. This is Cayman's way, Len says, of honouring 1976 as Family Year.
Organizations participating in this year's fair include: the Jaycees, the Lions Club, the Cricket Association, the Netball Association, the Basketball Assocation, the United Church, the Women's Guild, the Girls' Brigade, the Cayman Islands Conservation Association, the Scouts, the Caledonian Society, the Christian Endeavour youth group, the Kiwanis, the Darts League, the Cayman Islands Divers, the Gun Bay Church, the Red Cross, the Garden Club, the Agricultural Society, and the Community Councils.
Last year Bud Gordon chaired the committee to organize the Fair but due to other commitments, he was unable to do so this year.
Without an official chairman, everyone on this year's committee is pitching in. The committee includes: Dick Arch, Olive Miller, Pat Smith, Anita Ebanks, Ralph Coatsworth, Brian Bothwell, Bernard Passman, Lucille Seymour and the staff of N.C.S.S.
Look for a repeat of most of the same events as last year with the exception of the International Food Fair. Remember that the roads, Cardinal Avenue, Edward St., Fort St. and North Church Street from the dock to Fort Street will be closed from 9 a.m. until midnight Monday. Community groups not credited in the fair schedule of events are as follows: Boat Race by the Cayman Divers, Banana eating contest by N.C.S.S., Wheelbarrow Race by the Darts League, Tüg 'o War by the Lions Club, Bicycle Race by N.C.S.S and half-hour ballet by Jackie Balls.
Participants will go about setting up their respective booths for the Fair beginning at 9 a.m. Sunday morning. Volunteers with tools are encouraged to join them, Len says. After the excitement of the day, and the crowning of the King of the Fair, the fun will wind up with a street dance.
The Regeneration band and possibly other groups will provide music for the festivities starting at 6 p.m. and closing the Fair at 10 p.m. CHAIRMAN - MR. R. ARCH.
