One of the comments from the viewing public, in tune with many others, is that of Miss J. Ebanks, Teacher of C.W.B. School: "The 1978 Arts and Crafts Exhibition is a display of vibrant colour and much talent. Everyone should try to attend. My mind has been enriched by the experience of viewing the exhibits. Best of luck to the Society for promoting the fine arts in the Cayman Islands."
Under the leadership of Evelyn Andresen, Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Visual Arts Society, (a temporary set of officers for the first six months until the AGM in September), the first Arts and Crafts Exhibition obviously got off to a great start. The Chairman of the Exhibition was Rita Turren Stroup and with a fine committee of workers she did credit to the Society and the Island by presenting a very impressive show.
A large selection of crafts was on display and the improvement in painting was definitely noticed.
The Visual Arts Society expressed gratitude to the Cayman National Bank for selecting 6 of the paintings and craft for reproduction in their 1979 calendar. The Blue Ribbon Rosette awards attached to these winning entries enhanced the look of the show.
Jack Andresen designed and made the pegboard stands to hang the paintings and this gave a professional look to the Exhibition. The Society is also pleased that C.N.B. has started the Visual Arts Society Scholarship Fund with a donation of $1000.00. As one of the objects of the Visual Arts Society is to stimulate and encourage our young people in the visual arts, a Scholarship will be awarded a graduating High School student to further his career in art. It is interesting to note that one of the C.N.B. award winners was 16 year old Phillippe Bush, one of the Junior members of the Society. His Excellency The Governor, Mr. Thomas Russell, officially launched the Visual Arts Society Sunday afternoon. Among his remarks he commented on the contribution the Society was making toward culture and art in the Cayman Islands, and wished the V.A.S. much success for the future. He then drew the winning ticket for the water colour painting donated by Betty Wise and given away by the Society.
The lucky young winner was Joan Everson of Spotts. The Society was very happy to receive many new patrons and members during the Exhibition.
The next Arts and Crafts Exhibition will be held in November. The next regular meeting of the Visual Arts Society will be held on Wednesday July 19, at the home of Vivian Pearce. For further information about the Society, call Evelyn Andresen at 92185.
