It proved to be an extremely good match to celebrate the start of the 1979 Cricket season, and there was quality and excitement from both teams.

By-Rite lost the toss and were put into bat first by M. Williams skipper of the Presidents XI.

Openers A. Suckoo and B. Wight found the bowling of both A. DaCosta and R. Thompson lively and were kept relatively quiet with a mere 24 runs showing on the board at the end of the first ten overs.

By this time skipper M. Williams and R. Greenidge had taken over the bowling responsibilities from the speed men. It was in Williams' sixth over that Suckoo was out caught by Greenidge for 21. J. Hamilton then joined B. Wight in the middle and after a few singles started looking for runs and put a little pep in the By-Rite batting.

At the expense of P. Milburns' bowling he hit three 4's and a 2 off one over. He was not out for 38 at the close of the innings with B. Wight not out 50, made in 2 hours and 18 minutes.

These batsmen together with six extras brought the By-Rite score to 115 for one wicket achieved in some 33 overs. Good cricket but not a big enough score to be really confident about.

The Presidents XI started off their innings with the Hall partnership of Ken and Kenrick in a really aggressive mood and there were 29 runs on the board at the end of the first four overs, which resulted in some rapid bowling changes.

Although the selected side were. 26 runs down for 3 wickets they continued to go after the By-Rite bowling and in under 90 minutes passed the Supermarket score with just one wicket remaining in 21.5 overs.

M. Williams played a captains innings hitting the winning run, capturing his sides top score of 26 and also bagging the only By-Rite wicket to fall. It should also ExCo CROUCH - Mr. T be mentioned he came in at number 8 when the score stood at 77 for 6 and the decision very much in the balance.

It was definitely the middle B. Wight, By-Rite 50 not out. Best bowling - D. Wight, By-Rite with 6 wickets for 29 runs.

Man of the match M. Williams.

This match does give the cricketing public a good idea of the excellent Cricket to come this season with the Byuman starts the game

order batsman - Skinner, Greenidge, DaCosta and Williams that carried the match for the Presidents XI.

Best batting of the match - Contd. on page 15 from page 16 Rite team already hot favourites to repeat last year's success.

Sorry to see Peter Milburn going for a hook shot and ending up with a ball in the face which required quite a few stitches. Knowing Peter this will not affect his performances as an aggressive attractive batsman.

Criticism of the opener - (1). Presidents XI - No President. (2). Cricket Association was the home team whose responsibilities are providing the new balls and marking out the ground - NEITHER CARRIED OUT.

Lets hope this is not an indication of the lack of interest from the governing body. Last word of praise to the umpires Murphy and Johnson for unbiased decisions and good control of the match.
