Just as they sound, kitchen sachets are conjured from the spice rack and grocery shelf. One kitchen recipe from "Rags," for example, is primarily tea bags.
Traditional sachets, on the other hand, have their origins in ancient herbal books. They may call for exotic ingredients such as dried rose petals, lavender flowers or sandalwood shavings. Fortunately, however, many exotic ingredients are available today in health However you choose to mix your sachet, your closets and drawers will certainly benefit. Mixing the perfumed powder and making the small bags are easy. Directions are below.
MATERIALS: Sachet Bag: Fabric scraps, lace trim, sewing supplies, scissors. Kitchen Sachet: Three tea bags or three tablespoons black tea, one tablespoon crushed cinnamon bark, one-eighth-teaspoon ground ginger, and three crushed cloves or one-eighth-teaspoon ground cloves.
Sleep Potion: Two handfuls of dried rose petals, one-half-cup mint, and one-fourth-cup cloves.
Rose Sachet: Four ounces rose petals, two ounces sandalwood shavings and one-half-teaspoon rose oil. MAKING THE SACHET BAG: 1. From fabric scraps, cut two circles or heart shapes, approximately four inches in size. 2. Sew lace trim to right side of sachet front.
LACE RUFFLE: 1. Cut an 18- to 24-inch length of lace trim. 2. Fold lace in half, with wrong side inside. Sew one-half-inch seam at short ends. 3. Trim seam to one-eighth inch. 4. Turn lace to wrong side. Press seam closed. 5. Stitch three-sixteenths inch from seam. This creates an enclosed or French seam. 6. Sew long gathering stitches at upper edge of lace.
ASSEMBLING THE BAG: 1. Adjust gathers to fit around sachet front. 2. With right sides together, baste lace to fabric. 3. With right sides together, stitch sachet back to sachet front. Leave a small opening at a bottom edge for turning.
FINISHING: 1. Mix kitchen sachet, sleep potion or rose sachet ingredients together. 2. Turn sachet bag to right side. 3. Fill bag with sachet ingredients. 4. Sew opening shut with tiny hem stitches.
