Colin Magnier became the first amateur jockey to win the race for 19 years as he took his 40-1 shot to the 101,475 dollars first prize ahead of Broadsword, with a weakening Ekbalco third one and a half lengths away.
Daring Run, the 9-4 favourite, fell on the flat just after the halfway stage of the 14-horse, two-mile test. Both American-bred Broadsword, at 100-30, and 7-2, Hope Ekbalco looked poised to produce their runs after For Auction forged ahead. But they failed to make any headway on the winner who stayed in command until the finish.
Trainer Michael Cunningham said: "Ever since I bought the horse from a local farmer I knew he was going to be very good, but he's 127 hands and always needed time."
David Richolson, trainer of Broadsword, said: "Peter Scudamore rode a lovely race on him, produced him at exactly the right time, but we were beaten."
Irish-trained horses underlined their supremacy in the festival by winning the first two races on the card. Miller Hill, a 20-1 chance, bet 5-1 shot Ryeman by two and a half lengths in the two-mile Supreme Novices' hurdle and The Brocksheee headed Classified in the Arkle Challenge trophy steeplechase over the same distance.
