A few minutes of exercise every day will work wonders for both you and your dog, to burn off excess calories, strengthen muscles, reduce stress and promote a better overall attitude. Regular exercise can not only help keep your dog fit and trim, but will also build a strong circulatory system that makes him less susceptible to various illnesses.

Note that it is very important to have your dog examined thoroughly before engaging him in any kind of exercise routine. Certain breeds are not capable of sustained, strenuous exercise, so a check-up will allow the veterinarian to prescribe the right diet and exercise program for your dog. Remember also that moderation is essential for both humans and animals. If you plan to have your dog jog along while you ride a bike or run, be sure to begin slowly and build endurance over several weeks.

Although dogs are generally in better shape than people, they don't have the sense to stop when they've had enough exercise. So, if your dog has been sedentary all winter, be cautious on your first time out. The dog shouldn't run long distances right away, but he may overdo it trying to please you.
