But Best was ordered released on bail after his lawyers filed an appeal against the sentence.
Prosecutor Amanda Pugh told the court Best was arrested near Buckingham Palace, the London residence of Queen Elizabeth II, around 1.30 am on Nov.3 after police officers saw him driving his car erratically.
A breath test administered at a police station revealed Best was illegally intoxicated. He was released on bail to appear in court later in the day but failed to attend and an arrest warrant was issued.
He was re-arrested after a struggle when seen entering a neighbor's house. In a a further struggle inside a police van, Best punched one of the police officers in the face, said Pugh. Defense attorney Christopher Erving said Best had been an alcoholic since 1979. He had tried to overcome the problem by visiting a clinic in the United States and several hospitals in Britain, said Erving.
An operation in Norway kept Best off alcohol for more than 12 months, his attorney added. night for local football, one in which happily cheering humans suddenly turned into brutish beasts.
