London - Ford Motor Co. Ltd., the British arm of the U.S. automaker, and Iveco, the trucks division of the Italian manufacturer Fiat S.A., announced Wednesday a merger of their heavy truck operations in Britain. A new company, Iveco Ford Truck Ltd., will manufacture vehicles over four tons in Britain and continue distribution of British-made Ford trucks in export markets, the companies said. The agreement takes effect July 1.

Ford of Britain and Iveco will each own 48 per cent of the new company's equity, with the remaining 4 per cent being be marketed alongside

owned by Credit Suisse Ford trucks in Britain. The manufacturing of Ford's cargo range of trucks will continue at Langley, England, Ford said.

Iveco will continue to produce trucks on the European continent in its own factories. They will Ivcco is Europe's second-largest truck manufacrer after Daimler-Benz of West Germany. It builds trucks in Italy, West Germany and France and maintains a sales operation and parts depot in Britain.
