Parisians walk
Paris - All Paris bus and subway transport is expected to halt Wednesday in a 24-hour strike called by six of seven transport unions, their first joint action since 1977.
Police have advised Parisians simply to walk to work, but expect major traffic jams in any event. A few non-strikers may man the odd subway train or bus, but are not expected to make a significant impact. Some 550 trains and 3,700 buses run at peak hours.
The strike was called because of discontent, general throughout the state sector in France, over freezing of salaries by the new conservative government.
Cairo crash
Cairo, Egypt - Egyptian authorities said Wednesday that two more people had died of injuries suffered in the crash of an Air Sinai passenger plane, raising the death toll to 22. The aircraft crashed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday as the pilot tried to make an emergency landing here in a raging sandstorm after reporting an engine on fire.
