Silverstone, England (AP) - Britain's Nigel Mansell threw the world Formula One auto-racing championship standings wide open Sunday with a thrilling victory over Nelson Piquet of Brazil at the British Grand Prix.

Though Mansell and Piquet are Williams-Honda teammates, they also are bitter rivals and the Briton said he took special pleasure in posting the win.

Mansell chased Piquet until two laps remained of the 65-lap race. Despite a pit stop that put the Briton 28 seconds behind, Mansell caught and overtook Piquet on a right-hand bend. He went on to win by almost two seconds. Mansell covered the 192.985 miles (311.220 km) at an average speed of 146.208 mph (235.248 kph). The win made Mansell the first driver to repeat as champion of the British Grand Prix since Jim Clark's streak between1962-65.

Piquet finished more than a lap clear of compatriot Ayrton Senna, whose lead in the drivers's championship was cut to one point.

Reigning champion Alain Prost of France retired 12 laps from the end and ended pointless. Senna, in a Lotus Honda, now has 31 points with nine races to go. Piquet and Mansell both have 30 points and Prost, who drives a McLaren Tag, has 26. The result sparked unprecedented scenes at Silverstone as Mansell was mobbed by some of the 100,000 fans as he took a victory lap.
