Mexico City, Cana - Guyanese Mark Richardson won his opening fight in boxing with a convincing performance Tuesday night at the Central American and Caribbean games here. Richardson pulled off a points victory against Jacob Garcia of the U.S. Virgin Islands. The match in the junior lightweight division was scored 24-11 in favour of the Guyanese. Emrol Phillip of Grenada lost his welterweight bout against Joseph Christian of the U.S.V.I. when the referee stopped the fight in the third round.

Guyanese Ewart Loncke went out in this category, losing on points (36-51) to Puerto Rican Alberto Torres.

Trinidad and Tobago romped past the young debutants of the Cayman Islands in badminton with an expected 5-0 victory, then were beaten by Mexico 4-1, but remained second in their group on Tuesday.

The lone Trinidadian victory came from Debbie O'Connor and Virginia Chariandy who defeated Margarita Bravo and Gabriela Melgoza 15-12, 15-6.

O'Connor, the Caribbean champion, went down fighting to the toprated Mexican, Maria de la Paz Luna Felix 12-9, 6-11,8-11.

Jamaica defeated Suriname 5-0 after stopping Barbados 4-1. Allan Alexander pulled off one for the Bajans, defeating Garth King 15-10, 10-15, 18-14 in the opening set. The Bajans however fought back from a 0-2 deficit to score an exciting hard-fought victory over Guatemala.

Rodney Selman and Gloria Chung defeated Raul Martinez and Mercedes Pierola in the last set 15-12, 3-15, 19-14.

Honduras stopped Barbados in mens' volleyball 15-4, 15-12, 15-7.
