LONDON, Reuter - French international Eric Cantona put English champions Leeds back on the rails with a sparkling hat-trick in their 5-0 premier league rout of Tottenham on Tuesday.

Cantona ruthlessly exposed Tottenham's defensive limitations as Leeds bounced back from their shock 4-1 defeat at Middlesbrough three days ago. Cantona, who helped himself to a hat-trick against Liverpool in the season-opening Charity Shield earlier this month, played a part in all five goals.

The first owed much to the controversial backpass rule. Cantona had the ball whipped off his toes and played back to Eric Thorstvedt. However, the Norwegian keeper's footwork let him down and Rod Wallace nipped in to score from an acute angle.

That was the cue for Cantona to take charge with goals in the 26th, 31st and 47th minutes. His first and third were drilled home with deadly accuracy, while his second was a perfectly placed header from David Batty's chipped pass. As Spurs capitulated meekly, Cantona unselfishly turned goalmaker again to put Lee Chapman in for Leeds fifth when he might have scored himself.
