The show, which opens to the public on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 November, will feature works of more than 35 artists in a variety of mediums including oils, water-colours, gauche, pastels, pen and ink, photography, stained glass, enamels, and sculptures in wood and clay.
One hundred and fifty five pieces will be in the main exhibition, plus over one hundred items at budget prices in the 'treasure chest' section of the show.
Opening hours for the exhibition at the Clarion Grand Pavilion will be from 9am until 6pm each day. "Admission is free so it is hoped all island residents will take an hour to visit and enjoy this feast of local art," said Pat Nicholson, show co-ordinator. Ms Nicholson and her team of volunteers are working hard to ensure this is the largest, most exciting show yet.
"With prices in the treasure chest as low as $20, we hope everyone will come out and do some Christmas shopping with us," she added. The painting shown in the poster is from an oil painting by Stewart Holmes. His painting was been chosen from over a dozen submitted by local artists in a "show poster competition" at the VAS September meeting. It was agreed his entry best represented the show theme of "Caribbean Expressions".
Mr. Holmes said he had been inspired in his choice of subject by photographs in a book about Cayman called "The people time forgot", written by George "Barefoot" Nowak. Some of the faces in the poster are his interpretations of people portrayed in the book, said Mr. Holmes.
As proceeds from the book are donated to The Pines retirement home, Barefoot expressed his hope that people enjoying the poster would also purchase a copy of "The people time forgot" and so help The Pines at the same time.
The poster, which promotes the 26 November opening of the annual art exhibition, is being sponsored for the second year running by The Bank of Butterfield International (Cayman) Ltd. The bank's managing director, Nick Duggan, was recently presented with the first of this limited edition by VAS president Tom Abate in appreciation of the bank's sponsorship.
