London (AP) - Relegated Crystal Palace got off on the right foot Saturday with a 4-3 win over Barnsley in England's First Division in the opening week of Britain's soccer season.

The English and Scottish Premier Leagues open next weekend. Leicester, another club relegated last season from the Premier League, also picked up a victory, 2-1 over Sunderland. But there was no joy for relegated Ipswich, a 3-1 loser at Birmingham.

Crystal Palace fell behind 1-0 on a goal by Barnsley's Steve Davis in the 12th minute. But captain Ray Houghton leveled after 25 minutes, striker Iain Dowie made it 3-1 with two goals just before and after the break, and Dean Gordon netted the fourth after 60 minutes. Adrian Viveash and Andy Liddell scored the others for Barnsley. Leicester got its winning goal in the 69th minute from Mark Robins. after taking a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when Australian international Steve Corica - signed Friday from the Sydney club Marconi - scored on a powerful shot from 20 yards (meters).

Steve Agenw made it 1-1 for Sunderland before Robins got the winner.

Birmingham, Second Division champions last season, served notice in their 3-1 victory with goals from Paul Tait, Ricky Otto and Jason Bowen. Bowen was recently signed from Second Division side Swansea. Ian Marshall got Ipswich's goal in the 47th minute.

Elsewhere in the First Division, Graham Taylor's league favorites Wolverhampton played a 2-2 draw with Tranmere. Wolves have been listed by British bookmakers as 3-1 favorites to win the First Division.

In the Scottish First Division, Clydebank and St Mirren played a 1-1 draw, and Dundee United and Greenock Morton also finished 1-1. Two other First Division matches are on tap Sunday with Derby playing Port Vale and Luton meeting Norwich.

Sunday will also showcase the traditional Charity Shield match before 50,000 at Wembley Stadium featuring FA Cup winner Everton against league champion Blackburn.

Blackburn, fresh from their first league title in 81 years, will field Alan Shearer, the Premier League scoring leader last season. Everton will be without several key players including Andrei Kanchelskis.

Kanchelskis' disputed 5-million pound (dlrs 8 million) transfer from Manchester United is to be settled next week by an arbitration panel. Kanchelskis is away this weekend for a match with the Russian national side and probably would not have played even if the deal had been completed.
