Transcendal meditation is defined by the Oxford dictionary as a "Method of detaching oneself from problems, anxiety, etc. by silent meditation and repetition of a mantra".
The Jamaica Herald newspaper reports Dr. Leopold Campbell the leader of the. Natural Law Party (NLP), which was formally launched on Monday, as saying that while his party was preparing to contest the next parliamentary elections constitutionally due in 1998, it had already ruled out any possibility of winning.
"We are not worried about not being able to win ... our concentration is to introduce transcendental meditation," Campbell, who is a medical doctor and health specialist, said.
Campbell claimed that the practice of transcendentalmeditation had proved more effective than other methods in eliminating deeply rooted stress. It also promoted health, intelligence, learning and non-violence, Campbell said.
He added the level of violent crime in Washington DC fell by 20 per cent following a twomonth demonstration project with transcendental meditation in 1993.
A similar project in Merseyside, United Kingdom led to a 60 per cent drop in crime between 1988 and 1993, Campbell was quoted as saying.
Campbell said Jamaica's po- Continued on page 2 from page 1 litical leaders such as prime minister Percival Patterson, Opposition leader Edward Seaga and head of the four-month-old National Democratic Movement (NDM) Bruce Golding all had good intentions but they would not be able to solve the nation's social and economic problems.
"No one will ever deliver you from your problems, only you can do that, and one way to do this is through transcendental meditation," Campbell remarked.
