Radio 702 said two of the injured died at Tembisa Hospital, raising the death toll to 15. Hospital officials refused to immediately confirm the report by the private radio station.
Police inspector Kamal Shivanand said the security guards used prods to push back hundreds of commuters who were pushing their way past a ticket barrier and on to the platform at the Tembisa township railroad station northeast of Johannesburg.
Shivanand said people at the back of the crowd surged forward, knocking down and trampling people in front. He said the stampede happened at about 6 a.m. (0400 GMT), when the station was jammed with people going to work.
Radio 702, reporting from the scene, said dozens were injured, including at least six seriously.
Shivanand said 18 of the injured were taken to Tembisa hospital.
