The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA) is launching a competition for the design of a commemorative coin to celebrate the new millennium.

The contest, which runs until 13 November, seeks to identify an appropriate design, to be featured on the reverse side of the year 2000 numismatic coin issue. A portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II will appear on the obverse side.

The Authority's general manager, Ms. Cindy Bush, explained that the design must relate to the Islands and the idea should be original. "This is an opportunity to be included in a significant historical event, and all Cayman residents are welcome to submit their designs," she added. In addition to a prize of $500, the winner will receive one of the commemorative coins when they are minted.

Several competition guidelines exist. The design must be easily portrayed on a coin approximately two inches in diameter. The coin's perimeter will have a 12-segmented scallop shape to represent the numbers on a clock face and symbolising time. The winning design will become solely the property of the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority.

Additional details, together with competition entry forms, may be obtained from the CIMA, Elizabethan Square office, telephone 949-7089 or fax 945-1145. (GIS)
