Although Walter has been a resident of Sydney for 25 years, he was born and brought up in Jamaica. His father, S. G. (Gerry) Fletcher, was managing director and editor of the Gleaner Company (publisher of The Gleaner newspaper) in Jamaica for many years, and his grandfather, also Walter Fletcher, was well known in the Montego Bay area of Jamaica. Walter's grandfather is actually well known as one of the founders and one of the greatest promoters of Montego Bay, which was the leader in developing tourism in Jamaica.
Most Caymanians will know Montego Bay well due to inter-island yacht races and it being the nearest foreign airport to and stepping off point for Cayman. Walter's grandfather died aged 96 in 1976. He was a CBE.
