So often, at this time of year, society is consumed with the commercialism of the season and tends to forget the true meaning of Christmas. In this materialistic age it seems to be all about acquiring new possessions and spending more than most people can afford. We should be reminded that without the birth of Jesus Christ there would be no Christmas.
Material possessions are necessary and giving is good. Family and friends getting together for merriment is not to be discouraged but there is a time and a place for everything under the sun and we ought to take time to worship our Lord.
Of course, many people will be having as much fun and excitement as possible and there is a time and a place for this as well. But, let us all stop and consider the origin of the 'festival'. Not only should we stop to pay homage to Him at the time of the year that we celebrate his birth but we should celebrate the Christ child all year round.
Christmas brings with it the message of love, hope, peace and salvation for all. Churches offer programmes that can be enjoyed by everyone. It is time to visit those who may be ill or disheartened. It is a time to visit with family and friends and truly enjoy the holidays. This season remember to love one another and give thanks.
Consideration should also be given to the many people around the world who were affected by the tragic events in the US so many suffered the lost of loved one this past year. We are reminded that there is simply just so much to be thankful for.
As the war against terrorism continues it is important to note that Jesus Christ does have a place in the Muslim religion as well as the Christian religion. Many Muslims celebrate His birth and live good lives, as do many Christians.
Therefore, let us all remember the true meaning of Christmas and take time to give thanks to arguably the greatest Man who ever lived amongst men. We should make a concerted effort to live peacefully with each other regardless of religious beliefs and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
