The inaugural Cayman Airways flights connecting the Cayman Islands to Panama City were scheduled to begin over the Easter weekend, from Thursday, 5 April to Monday, 9 April, 2012. Regular Thursday and Monday flights start 31 May, 2012.
Premier McKeeva Bush announced the new Cayman Airways direct flight service at the start of March’s four-day trade mission to Panama organised by the Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce.
Cayman Airways is partnering with Copa Airlines, Panama’s flag carrier airline, in order to tap into the South American market via Panama. Copa Airlines connects to Panama City through five different Brazilian destinations, Brasilia, Manaus, Porto Allegre, Renife and Sao Paolo.
A primary focus of the Chamber’s trade mission was the Expocomer trade show, featuring some 600 booths from 30 different countries. It was the Chamber’s fourth mission to Panama, but first since 2008.
During the week, the Premier again brought up the idea of having a transhipment facility in Cayman. Such a facility would be built to take advantage of large ships that will be able to use the Panama Canal once its ongoing expansion and widening is completed.
