Green Energy from Home Gas

As one of the lightest, simplest hydrocarbons in existence, propane is the cleanest fuel-based source of energy available in the Cayman Islands. Propane usage will help preserve our air quality here since propane emits significantly lower amounts of greenhouse gases and smog-producing hydrocarbons than conventional fuels.

Many people in the Cayman Islands are looking for alternatives to diesel-powered electricity. Whether it is to reduce their power bill or do the right thing environmentally, propane is rapidly becoming the preferred choice as an affordable ‘green’ energy source.

Gregg Radley, who recently joined Home Gas as its general manager, started in the propane business in 1987 and since then has done every field application possible. He became a regional manager running several plants for Ferrellgas for the last 20 years. While working in the States, Radley served on the Clean Cities Coalition, which promotes technologies to improve air quality across America.

He believes strongly in the importance of propane as environmentally safe energy. The following are his thoughts about his recent move to Cayman and why propane has long been recognized as a low-carbon, safe energy.

Home In Cayman

My wife and I are excited to come to these beautiful Islands with great wonderful people. The Boddens are a fantastic group of people to work for. As the premier propane provider serving the US, Ferrellgas was a large successful corporate structure. It was an excellent experience but it was time to look for something different.

When I met the directors of Home Gas, I knew this was the place where I really wanted to come to work. I’ve been on the Island since mid-March and have spent time with every member of the Home Gas team. When you blend a group like the Boddens together and the Home Gas team–it’s a very exciting opportunity to be able to lead that team.

The Cleaner Alternative

One of the things that I have always seen about propane is its usefulness as an eco-friendly fuel. It’s a by-product of natural gas processing and crude oil refining. These days it’s refined almost exclusively from natural gas.

It is a much cleaner alternative to the diesel fuel that is used to generate electricity. Since propane appliances are typically more energy efficient than electrical appliances, they are less expensive to operate. Plus propane power costs less than diesel generated energy.

As a Non-toxic Fuel

With propane, we don’t have a footprint at all as far as damaging our delicate eco-system. Propane is non-toxic and not harmful to soil if spilled on the ground; nor will it contaminate our drinking water supplies or the sea. Since it is colourless and odourless, a distinctive smell is added to it for safety reasons.

Advantageous appliances
I’m excited by the innovative line of propane appliances Home Gas carries–everything from gas grills to cooktops and ranges; to tankless water heaters; clothes dryers, fire pit tables, generators, outdoor lighting, pool heaters and more. If it runs off propane and you want it for your home or business, Home Gas can get it for you.

Propane appliances have so many advantages and we are more than happy to provide you with a free consultation and estimate. If you’re building or renovating a home, we’ll work with you from start to finish.

Professionally trained installation technicians

I’ve been in the propane industry for more than 25 years. Safety has always been very important for me as far as ensuring every installation is always done properly. Home Gas places the same strict focus on the safety of every appliance we sell and install. All of our installation technicians and staff are professionally trained to ensure the highest standards of safety are rigorously maintained. Everyone should understand that propane is not something you need to be scared of.

Autogas opportunities

Propane can also be used as motor fuel or autogas (as it is more popularly called today) to easily power vehicles. Home Gas is already running 90 per cent of its fleet of trucks and cars on propane. Propane can be used in a dual-fuel system, switching seamlessly from gasoline to power a vehicle, or as a supplemental fuel injected into the combustion chamber of a diesel engine in just the right amounts to achieve a perfect complete ignition. Either of these set-ups can save you money in reduced engine maintenance, better fuel economy, increased engine performance and best of all–significantly less carbon emissions polluting the air quality here in Cayman.

Thinking Ahead
Whether you are using propane inside or outside your home or business, it’s the ‘green’ thing to do. We all have a choice to make–and it’s one that will affect the environment of these Islands for generations to come. My hope is that people will think ahead to the future lives of those who will call these beautiful Islands their home.

I look forward to bringing the benefit of my experience to the Islands and continuing the momentum that has been achieved by this exciting innovative company. Every step we take now to reduce our carbon footprint will have significant returns in ensuring the eco-viability of Cayman’s future. Go Green. Go Propane.
