Spotlight shines on Jordan

The Cayman Islands government is honouring three of its biggest sports heroes in a new way.

Local TV programme GIS Spotlight will be highlighting the achievements of swimmers Shaune and Brett Fraser and jet ski racer Jordan ‘JJ’ McLean. The show is expected to air on Monday, 16 January, and include a milestone graduation and pet therapy.

The three young men catapulted Cayman into new realms of international achievement in 2011. The Fraser brothers qualified for the 2012 London Olympics in the 200 metre freestyle event, marking the second straight time they will star on that stage (they competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics). Shaune, 23, has been to the Olympics on three occasions. The George Town natives, sons of Laurice and Jim Fraser, also won gold and silver in the Pan-Am Games in Mexico. Brett, 22, broke a 16-year-old record in the process.

McLean, 22, won the International Jet Sports Boating Association Pro Runabout limited world title in Lake Havasu, Arizona. The Bodden Town native also won the US national tour series last year.

Government recently staged a national ceremony to honour the trio and continues its celebration of their triumphs. Their accomplishments are true testaments to what a small island nation can produce.

Also on the programme is the first graduation of the Civil Service College. Five civil servants secured Associate degrees through the University College of the Cayman Islands and 11 Fire Service, Police, Civil Service and Cadet Corps personnel earned diplomas from the Institute of Leadership and Management, UK.

In addition Spotlight looks at the Lighthouse School where rescue-trained Border Collie Murphy provides a new approach to therapy for special-needs individuals.

Produced by Government Information Services, GIS Spotlight is a weekly programme that airs on Cayman27 at 7:30pm on Mondays and on Thursdays.
