CrossFit’s eating challenge will end with tasty prizes

CrossFit 7 Mile members have started the year not just training as hard as ever but also trying to improve their diets. One of the incentives is that co-owners Carl and Wanda Brenton have introduced a nutrition competition.

People generally try to improve their fitness and diets in January so the Brentons decided to run a clean eating competition to help members reach their fitness and body shape goals quicker.

CrossFit is a strength and conditioning work out that combines weightlifting, sprinting, gymnastics, powerlifting, kettlebell training, plyometrics, rowing, and medicine ball training. Members tend to get significant results in cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, agility, balance and coordination very quickly. Variety and fun is just as important as intensive training which is partly why it is so popular.

CrossFit athletes run, row, jump rope, climb rope and carry odd objects. They frequently move large loads quickly over long distances and use powerlifting and Olympic weightlifting techniques. In the year CrossFit 7 Mile has been open on West Bay Road, it has become a mecca for anyone wanting to get fit and for many athletes from other sports who want to increase their performance levels. Triathetes like Caroline Cahill and Pam Abbott love it.

New members are put in groups for a free introduction where they are put through a baseline fitness test with trainers like Chris Spigner.

Carl said: “We’ve just started our third week of our CrossFit 7 Mile 2012 Clean Eating Challenge. This is a 13 week challenge that 80 of our members signed up for. It will end with a huge event on 14 April where we will crown the winners. There is $2,800 up for grabs in prizes for the members so a great incentive.”

Brenton emphasises that the eating challenge is not a diet because 99 per cent of diets do not work. When on them people who follow diets lose weight but tend to put the weight back on as they go back to their old easting habits and tend to end up even heavier.

Some of the meals recommended include scrambled eggs and greens, tabouli – which is a Mediterranean salad, tuna burgers, pecan-encrusted seared salmon and a quick and easy recipe for ground beef chilli.
