Be sure to get those Cuban grooves going

And loads of other ones, too

Percussion and piano are the order of the day for world-renowned performer and teacher Julio Ortiz.

The Trinidad, Cuba-born percussionist and pianist is newly-ensconced in his studio at Pasadora Place, offering lessons to the good people of the Cayman Islands.

“People can learn music, piano and all styles like classical, jazz, Latin. There are many, many percussion rhythms that can be learnt as well,” says Julio, who is an absolute wizard on the congos, among other instruments.

The virtuoso says that all levels and all ages are welcome.

“Whether you are an absolute beginner or already able to play and want to take further lessons, all are welcome.

“A drum teacher and a guitar teacher will later be joining, too, which is exciting,” Julio tells us.

World tours

The musician has played worldwide and previously was based in Bermuda and Canada. His blend of a deep theoretical understanding and the more emotive sounds of the Trinidad and Havana streets lend a real open-mindedness to the sessions.

From Salsa to Jazz, cha-cha-cha to Son, there’s much to be learned from one of Cayman’s skilful practitioners. So what can people get out of learning a new instrument?

“Music is like a cultural dance and keeps you in touch with the soul. There is stress in this world, but if you have an hour to sit down and play some music that just melts away and gets you out of that go, go, go stress level,” he says. “Some of my students work in offices and come here at lunchtime for that reason even. It’s amazing.”
