Jazz lovers will be spreading out blankets and setting up picnic chairs on the lawn at Gaston Maloney’s home in George Town this weekend to enjoy an evening of cool contemporary jazz with a Caribbean flair. It’s the popular annual Jazz on the Green event, which brings together local and international performers, for an open air, all-inclusive jazz festival.
Jazz on the Green takes place on Saturday, 2 March, starting at 5.30pm. Organiser Gaston Maloney opens up his garden – on Agnes Way, located between Jose’s gas station and Linford Pierson Highway, in George Town – to several hundred residents and visitors.
The evening will truly have the atmosphere of a music festival and the $75 tickets will include all drinks and food as well as an evening of fabulous music.
The Cayman Swing Kings, the 17-piece jazz band that is one of the most talked about bands to emerge in Cayman in recent months, will be kicking the event off in style.
They will be followed by a number of internationally famous performers, such as Leon Foster Thomas, a Trinidadian by birth, who puts his Caribbean roots into the steel pans he plays, for a lively jazz fusion. Leon started drumming at the age of three, and over the course of his musical career has racked up an impressive number of awards and worked with some great names, including Dolly Parton and Cyrill Neville.
The festival will also feature Eddie Bullen, a Canadian pianist, songwriter, arranger and producer. His distinctive style of contemporary jazz is flavoured with Caribbean and Latin rhythms.
Also hailing from Canada Elmer Ferrer will be showing the audience why he is considered one of the world’s premiere guitarists. Born and raised on the music-rich island of Cuba, he began to play guitar at age 12, gradually developing his energy rich blend of jazz, rock and blues.
Vocalist Marisa Lindsay’s soulful stylings will be sure to draw in the crowd. The Barbados born artist’s vocal prowess blends traditional jazz and soul in a whole new way.
Jazz on the Green is one of the most popular musical events to take place in Cayman and organiser Gaston Malone is hoping for a turn out of 400 to 500 this year. Any and all proceeds from the event will go to the George Town Sports Club, to help fund the programmes that benefit youths in the George Town area.
Tickets are available from Funky Tangs, Moneygram, Lee Ramoon, Gaston Maloney, Grand Cayman Beach Suites, Singh’s Roti Shop or online at wwww.caymanboxoffice.com
