Cayman netball sees its second indoor game this year.
The Cayman Islands Netball Association is putting on a trio of 2013 Open League matches this Saturday, 9 March, at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre.
At 5.40pm, All Stars B face Supa Storm in a plate division showdown. The championship group then takes centre stage as the Flames Strikers battle Unity at 7pm before Storm Radarz challenge Rising Stars A at 8.20pm.
Most of the clubs starred during the first indoor showcase held last month. Behind star shooter Karen Smith-James, All Stars B defeated Rising Stars B, 29-19. Thanks to prodigy Rosemarie Wilson, Rising Stars A clipped Latoya Nixon and the Flames Strikers, 44-38. In spite of stellar efforts from Lavern Ebanks, Storm would lose to Katherine Maw and reigning national champions All Stars A, 43-27.
A pair of Saturday’s teams will have extra motivation based on recent results. Supa Storm crushed Renegades, 33-14, behind Olivia Samuels, while Rising Stars A lost a heart-breaker to All Stars A, 30-26, last Thursday. Rising Stars B also beat Jets, 46-36, last week. National coach Gillian Lee said the battle between the Stars was epic.
“The lead tossed and turned throughout the whole game with no more than five goals ever between the two teams,” Lee said. “Rising Stars lost to All Stars in the first round by 25 goals. Rising Stars managed to be consistent throughout the game, keeping unforced errors to a minimum. Rising Stars held a one goal lead at halftime.
“All Stars brought on Nicola Williams at half-time, who managed to liven up the attack and take them to a two-goal lead at third quarter time,” she added. “Her experience and leadership was invaluable. The final quarter saw All Stars keep controlled, while Rising Stars struggled in the final minutes of the game with their shooting being weaker than usual.”
Admission for Saturday’s games is $3 for adults with children under 13 free of charge.
