Mardi Gras: Mr. Luva Luva in concert

Jamaican-American reggae pop-star Shaggy, whose popular hits include “Boombastic,” “It Wasn’t Me” and “Angel,” is set to take to the stage on Ash Wednesday as part of Margaritaville’s third annual two-day Mardi Gras festivities. 

Festivities kick off Tuesday, March 4, with the “Fat Tuesday Masquerade Bash” at the George Town restaurant and bar. The free event, from 8 p.m., will feature local DJs Selecta Renegade, Lin and Sound Revolution, along with food and drink specials. 

On Wednesday, the “Mardi Gras Street Festival” begins at 6 p.m. along the George Town waterfront. Local performers opening for Shaggy include Stuart Wilson and Young Feva, along with music by Selecta Renegade, DJ Lin, Atom Skillz, DJ Super C and DJ XS.  

The event will also include lots of bead throwing and elaborate costumes in true Mardi Gras fashion.

Shaggy was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and is famed for his unique baritone-ranging singing voice. His first hit in 1993 was “Oh Carolina,” a dancehall re-make of the ska hit by the Folkes Brothers which appeared in the film “Silver.” He went on to win a Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 1996, featuring the popular single “Boombastic.” 

Tickets, available from Margaraitaville, Sing’s Roti Shop, Winners Circle Sport, J&M Electronic, Funky Tangs and Jacques Scott outlets, are $25 pre-sold, or $50 at the gate. VIP tickets are $60 and include a premium view of the concert from the Margaritaville balcony.
