The Cayman Islands Cycling Association elected new leadership for the year at its Annual General Meeting.
Craig Merren is returning as association president and presented an update on the major milestones and achievements of the association. Among the highlights was the purchase of fully equipped, purpose-built trailer that has enabled a more efficient and effective system to conduct and manage races. In addition, the association also has access to a proper timing system, which is fully electronic and has the ability to properly manage timing of all races.
“I am extremely pleased to be reelected once again to lead this association,” Merren said. “Cycling played an important part in my life and, without it, I am sure I wouldn’t have been able to reach where I am today and I am so pleased to be given the opportunity to give back to this great sport and my community.”
At the AGM last month, Alfred Ebanks was elected secretary, Michele Smith was elected treasurer, Andrew McLaughlin was elected first vice president, and Gary Clarke was elected second vice president.
Orrett Connor, Leslie Franklin, Courtney Myles and Raul Nicholson-Coe were then appointed by the board as directors.
Some of the board’s key objectives will be to update the bylaws of the association, establish sub-committees, such as audit and finance, public relations and marketing, and race and discipline, to further assist the board. Merren said the plan is to elevate cycling’s profile on the local sports scene.
“With this new, dynamic board in place, we are going to create better community outreach programs to ensure greater participation by persons from across all sections of the community,” Merren said. “We are going to bring back cycling to the forefront, as it was when I got involved as a young person.”
