Frederick makes instant impact

Footballer Shanelle Frederick has made an impressive start at South Georgia State College, scoring eight times in her first four games. She also scored five in pre-season matches.

A number of other Caymanians are also making the college’s start of the Division 1 Junior College season an excellent one.

South Georgia State College have only lost once, to national powerhouse Louisburg of North Carolina 3-2. Frederick and Abby Cuneo scored the goals in that defeat. Frederick, 18, is currently tied for the most goals in the region and is equal third in the US in goals scored.

Shamar Frederick, Shanelle’s mother, said, “The girls seem to be settling in just fine. They have adjusted well and are working hard both in the classroom and on the field.”

Head coach Ben Horner said that the college is extremely happy to have a Cayman connection. He said, “I was able to recruit all of these girls through Thiago Cunha, the former women’s national team technical director, and they have turned out to be a big success.”

He added that they were lucky to start off with Courtisha Ebanks who was the backbone of the South Georgia team in 2012 and was Honorable Mention All-American and have been able to attract top Cayman players like Amanda Nelson and Jetena Bodden starting at center back, Monique Roberts at holding midfield and Frederick as a striker.

“These girls, along with one from Scotland and our American contingent have created a great core,” he said. “Our goal is to be able to win our region championship and compete for a national championship.”

Frederick did not qualify for a government scholarship this year because college started before she could get results back for one exam.

Shamar Frederick said, “She is at school due to private funding from individuals such as Marcus Cumber (Island Air), Moses Kirkconnell, Kent and Amy Burke (Surebuilt Construction) and other individuals. We are so grateful for all of their support.

“We also thank Thiago Cunha who developed Shanelle’s talent. He believed in her from day one and has always been there to support her, even now that he is in Dubai.”
