Cadets seeks new recruits

An organization aiming to inspire young people to achieve success in life is seeking new recruits.

The Cayman Cadet Corps is seeking children ages 11 to 19 to enroll in its four-year program, which includes various camps and such activities as first aid, survival training, sailing, music and navigation.

The organization is also seeking adults willing to volunteer to become instructors. Military and cadet experience is a bonus, organizers say. However, training will be provided for those with no experience.

Currently, about 100 cadets in Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac regularly attend the program twice a week.

Bobeth O’Garro, Cadet Corps acting commandant, said the following schools have detachments: John Gray, Clifton Hunter and Layman Scott high schools and Triple C School. If a child does not attend any of the schools listed, there is also the South Sound Detachment, Marine Detachment (water based) and the Band Detachment for kids to enroll. Throughout the year, the cadets take part in up to 20 community service projects and also participate in challenging military-style and adventure activities.

Since the corps was established in March 2002, more than 450 high school students have taken part in the program, which focuses on teaching the value of citizenship, leadership, community service and personal responsibility.

The Cadet Corps also aims to instill a sense of accomplishment, self-esteem, teamwork and self-discipline, officials said.
