Air arrivals grow but cruise declines

February 2008’s tourist arrival statistics show a continued increase in air arrivals and a continued decline in cruise numbers.

Tourist air arrivals in February had an increase of 8.7 per cent over the same period last year while cruise arrivals experienced a slump of 13.54 per cent on the same month last year.

This continues the year over year growth in air arrivals over the past couple of years in a recovery of tourist numbers since Hurricane Ivan (which damaged 90 per cent of buildings in Grand Cayman in 2004). It also maintains a general decrease in cruise numbers experienced for most of last year.

February’s air arrivals figure of 30,380 is ahead of every year since 2001, bar 2004, which, at 32,022 is just over five per cent up on this February’s figure.

Within the various stay-over tourism markets, the US grew by 7.2 per cent for this past February over last year’s, Europe grew just by 3.5 per cent, and Canada took a spurt of 29.4 per cent.

It is 13.5 per cent down on last year’s February figure of 203,734, which had been the highest cruise figure ever for that month.

For the year to date (January and February) cruise figures are down 13.36 per cent on the same period last year.
